Moodle – with its acknowledgement of the increasing importance of personalised earning – provides an excellent tool with which to help raise standards in teaching and learning. Moodle rightly has a high reputation worldwide, offering schools real-world flexibility to quickly tailor their own courses from a huge pool of resources. Equiinet's implementation aids deployment, use and management of these tools.
Equiinet has worked with Moodle-accredited support partners to develop MoodlePilot: a secure, high performance and turnkey in-school appliance. Based on Equiinet's well known and highly tested caching and content delivery hardware/software platform, it offers twice the flexibility and capability of other solutions – combining elements for course management and content distribution within a Moodle environment.
MoodlePilot's course management element enables learning materials to be shared in a controlled fashion as well as the creation of lessons with well-structured paths. Forums and online chats can be used in a monitored environment, while quizzes and surveys maintain pupil interest as well as providing instant feedback. Assignments can be gathered and viewed online, placing less workload on teaching staff, and grades can be recorded: not only allowing online grade books but also the export to other systems. Student journals, self-assessment of submissions and student peer-group review environments all encourage pupil participation. Usefully, SCORM-compatible content can be deployed and both local and central management, as well as peering with other schools, is available.
The content distribution element of MoodlePilot provides a secure environment in which to deploy an extremely comprehensive array of eLearning software including dozens of titles and content that is not compatible with SCORM, if desired. A wide range of logs and statistics can be accessed and wide-ranging network security controls are available with options for both local and centralised management.
