URL Filtering FAQs

Q: What are the issues regarding legal liability?

A: Legal liability is perhaps the most costly potential issue associated with Internet use in the workplace. Just one employee accessing offensive content can initiate a public relations nightmare and expose the organisation to costly legal liability. Schools, libraries and other institutions have clear responsibilities to protect their pupils and users.

Q: How can I save money and speed up my network?

A: Organisations are losing millions per year due to employees accessing non-business related and inappropriate Web content. Most people in an organisation have no idea what their bandwidth costs are. Companies can spend tens of thousands providing this costly resource. As new users are added and activity increases, many organisations simply buy a "wider pipe" to handle the increased load. But how much of an organisation's resources are used for none essential bandwidth-intensive content like streaming audio, video, MP3 and other downloads? By eliminating unproductive and non-work related traffic on your network, all of your applications run faster, without needing to add costly bandwidth - by increasing the efficiency of the bandwidth you already have!

Q: How does URL Filtering work?

A: The NetPilot administrator is able to select a filter profile for each group of users on a NetPilot. (A group can have one member or many members). URLs entered by NetPilot users will be checked against a huge list of URLs categorised by SmartFilter database, provided by Secure Computing. If the requested URL is allowed in that profile - the users receives the requested web page. If the URL is denied access for that page, the page is blocked and an appropriate message is sent to the requester. The NetPilot administrator has access to logs which enable review of who is trying to get to which blocked sites.

Q: Why Secure Computing?

A: Quite simply we tested the rest - and they are not up to the job! Their databases do not have the quantity or quality.

Q: What categories do Secure Computing divide URLs into?

A: Currently Secure Computing have about 90 categories. Click for Details! These can be more easily applied into NetPilot by using groups of categories and assigning those access rights to groups of users. Click for Details!

Q: How can I assess the quality of the Secure Computing database?

A: The size and quality of the filtering database determines the quality of the filtering. A filtering product that is easy to use and cost-effective may be great for the network administrator, but if it doesn't block obviously inappropriate content, or blocks content that shouldn't be blocked, then it's really not an effective solution. A filtering list that is refined through years of fine-tuning using artificial intelligence, human review and customer feedback will produce the best results. Secure Computing has a database which is twice the size of its nearest competitor and typically ten times the size of most others.

Q: Can I test the quality of the Secure Computing list?
